Sitting Bull had a vision. In it, he saw soldiers falling into his camp. The Sioux fought the Battle of the Little Bighorn knowing they were going to win.

Custer returned to the Black Hills in 1874. He reported rich finds of gold. Miners swarmed to Paha Sapa, as the Sioux called the Black Hills. In 1875, many Sioux left the reservation to join Crazy Horse. He led the warriors in attacks on the miners. But there were too many whites for him to drive out. That summer the Oglala, Hunkpapa, Sans Arcs, and Miniconjou joined with the Cheyenne. They held a great Sun Dance. Crazy Horse was present but was not a dancer. Messengers arrived, asking Crazy Horse to come to a great council. The topic would be the sale of the Black Hills. Crazy Horse refused to attend. He said, “One does not sell the earth upon which the people walk.”1

In December, runners brought news to Crazy Horse. All Sioux were to be on their reservation by January 31, 1876. Those not there would be considered hostile. Crazy Horse refused. He led his people to join Sitting Bull. By May, lodges filled the valley of the Rosebud. In a Sun Dance, Sitting Bull offered Wakan Tanka 100 pieces of flesh. He saw a vision of many soldiers falling into the Sioux camp.

Every few days the camp moved to find fresh grass. In early June it moved to the valley of the Little Bighorn River.
